The Summer Institute
Based on the proven National Writing Project model, the Southern Colorado Writing Project Summer Institute on the Teaching of Writing provides opportunities for teachers at all grade levels, K-16, and from across disciplines to:
- share their expertise,
- study current research on writing instruction and writing across the curriculum,
- develop their own skills as writers,
- prepare workshops on writing instruction for presentation to colleagues at their home institutions and elsewhere.
The Summer Institute will be held at Colorado State University-Pueblo June 9 through July 3, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., four days a week . Participants will register for the three-credit graduate course, English 578, Workshop in the Teaching of Writing.
- In-state tuition will be waived for all applicants selected to participate.
- Each selected participant will have the option to receive a $500 cash stipend cash awarded upon completion of the program or register for an additional three graduate credits.
- Selected writings by participants will be published in a Summer Institute anthology.
Successful participants will be named SCWP Teacher-Consultants, authorized to present workshops in SCWP-coordinated programs.
Application Information:
Applicants should send a detailed letter that explains their interest in the program and includes the following:
1. Demographic Details
Institution or program, grades taught or role within the institution or program, profile of student body, etc.
2. Explanation for interest in the Program
Why is this program appealing to you? What potential contributions will you make to the program? What are your hopes and desires for the program?
3. Teaching Writing
Please describe one approach or strategy you use to teach writing and/or how you use writing to help students learn. Focus on what has worked for you and your students. Please explain your thinking about this teaching approach, why you think it works, and any issues or dilemmas it raises for you and your students.
In addition to this letter, applicants should submit a current resume and one letter of recommendation from a colleague, professor, or supervisor to:

The deadline for the 2008 Summer Institute has currently passed; however, we are accepting inquiries for the 2009 session.
Two pre-institute meetings are required for accepted participants:
Saturday, April 19 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Saturday, May 17 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
