With a quarter-century of success, the National Writing Project has demonstrated that the best teachers of writing are other teachers, that contemporary academic studies in the field of rhetoric and composition have practical value for writing teachers at all levels, that writing promotes learning in all areas of the curriculum, and that teachers who are writers themselves are the most effective writing teachers. These principles guide the Southern Colorado Writing Project and its Summer Institute for the Teaching of Writing.

The SCWP is an affiliate of the National Writing Project, and is jointly sponsored by the National Writing Project, Colorado State University-Pueblo, Pueblo School District 60, and Pueblo School District 70.
